  4.     When word of the massacre in Tiananmen Square first reached
  5. the University of Michigan, the 250 Chinese students studying
  6. there jumped into action: they purchased a fax machine. Daily
  7. summaries of Western news accounts and photographs were faxed
  8. to universities, government offices, hospitals and businesses
  9. in major cities in China to provide an alternative to the
  10. government's distorted press reports. The Chinese students
  11. traded fax numbers back home along the computer network that
  12. links them around the U.S. The fax brigades at Michigan were
  13. duplicated on many other campuses. "We want everyone to see that
  14. there's blood in the streets," says Sheng-Yu Huang, a chemistry
  15. student at the University of California, Berkeley.

  17.     Some 40,000 Chinese are studying in the U.S., one of the
  18. largest group of foreigners on American campuses. They
  19. represent a crucial element in China's hopes for economic
  20. modernization, but they have also had firsthand experience with
  21. Western political freedoms. All around the U.S. last week, they
  22. were in the forefront of protests against the repression in
  23. their homeland.

  25.     In New York City about 30 people have engaged in a symbolic
  26. hunger strike across the street from the United Nations. They
  27. were demanding U.N. condemnation of the crackdown in Beijing and
  28. the dispatch of medical workers and human-rights observers to
  29. China. Though many of the students in the U.S. are children of
  30. Communist Party members, and some are members themselves, the
  31. army's brutality has soured them on the party's monopolistic
  32. rule. "The only way to save the country is to go to a multiparty
  33. system," says John Shao, a student at the Virginia Polytechnic
  34. Institute and State University in Blacksburg. He renounced his
  35. party membership after witnessing scenes of the Tiananmen Square
  36. bloodbath.

  38.     For many, the most anguishing decision is whether to return
  39. to China when their studies are completed. Now that Chinese
  40. authorities are tracking down the leaders of the Tiananmen
  41. Square demonstrations, students who took part in protests in the
  42. West may also be seen as infected with the disease of democracy.
  43. One young adviser to the Tiananmen Square demonstrators was Liu
  44. Xiaobo, a lecturer at Beijing Normal University; he had returned
  45. to China last winter from a fellowship at Columbia University.
